Petronila Trumata Smith was born on May 31, 1932 in Dauin Negros Oriental Philippines. Her parents Miguel and Antonia Trumata were coconut farmers. Nila, as she was called, was the oldest of four girls. Her parents raised her in a very religious environment, and she remained dedicated to the Catholic faith to the end of her days.

When she was 26, she went to Manila to visit her cousins, hoping to find work to help support her family as well. While in Manila she met and fell in love with Benjamin Smith. Ben was living in Manila on a special assignment for the US Army. Ben and Nila were married on June 29, 1960. Nila and Ben returned to the US in 1961. Their lives really began when their children were born. They had four children; Troy, Richard, Carissa and Terry. Nila kept busy, raising her children and running the household. With Ben away on military assignment a lot of the time, she was often both a mom and a dad to the kids. She learned to play catch with the boys and would take Carissa to ballet. She had a love of life and was not afraid to try something new. She was self-taught in most of her hobbies such as; cake decorating, sewing, upholstery, and bowling. Eventually she learned to drive and took various jobs so she could always be close to the kids. Her first job was working in the school cafeteria, so she could see the kids at school. She was an all around mom and her efforts have shown to this day.

After 35 years she wanted to visit her homeland. She and Ben went to Dauin where she was welcomed. After a few trips to the Philippines, she slowed down to spend more time with her grandchildren. She loved her grandchildren; they were her life to the very last day.

During the 50 years that she and Ben were married, she never lost her focus on God. In 1976 she found Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church and fell in love all over again. She loved the people of the parish and made the Church another home.

We all love her very much and miss her, but we know that it is God's will. We are sure that he has a great plan for her because he always takes the Best.

Nila is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Benjamin Smith and her four children: son Troy and his wife Dawn Smith, son Richard Smith, Daughter Carissa and her husband Darryl Hunt; and son Terry and wife Andrea Smith. She has seven grandchildren; Sarah, Slayton, Reed, Troy Jr., Spencer, Ryan and Grant, and two sisters in the Philippines, Maria T. Alma and Narcing D. Trumata
